PokerStars on FanDuel Absorbs Roughly $1.75 Million in Tournament Overlays

PokerStars on FanDuel has absorbed roughly $1.75 million in tournament overlays across the Ignite and Dynasty Series since launching the combined Michigan, New Jersey and Pennsylvania network in April. The operator paid the gap between entry revenue and promised prize pools, leaving players to receive the full guarantees.

The total comprises a $1,063,762 shortfall in the spring Ignite Series and a further $686,740 in September’s Dynasty Series, according to Legal US Poker Sites. An overlay is not the operator’s final profit-and-loss figure: Pokerfuse calculated that roughly $326,000 in tournament fees reduced the Ignite Series’ net loss to about $737,800.

Ignite ran from April 18 to May 4, offering 90 tournaments and $5 million in guarantees. Eighty events missed their targets, and the overlay equalled almost 15% of the full guarantee. PokerStars and FanDuel largely held to the original schedule and prize promises, making only about $60,000 in minor guarantee reductions.

The $300 Ignite Main Event drew 1,441 entries but fell nearly $100,000 short of its $500,000 guarantee. The $50 Mini Main Event produced the festival’s biggest field, at 1,861 entries, yet missed its $100,000 target by more than $15,000. Other sizeable shortfalls included about $63,600 in the $100 Sunday Dynasty, nearly $51,000 in the $250 Blast Off and about $38,300 in the $1,500 High Roller Main Event.

As covered in September, the Dynasty Series was promoted as a 100-event festival with $3.5 million in guarantees. It ultimately paid more than $3.5 million in prize money, but 86 individual tournaments missed their respective guarantees. Surplus entries in some events did not cancel overlays elsewhere, because each event’s guarantee was assessed separately.

Three major No-Limit Hold’em events accounted for nearly $150,000 of the Dynasty overlay, with the $300 Main Event on Sept. 27 and 28 representing most of that combined deficit. The platform’s April launch combined liquidity across the three states and promised bigger games and prize pools, though players still had to be physically located in an approved jurisdiction to enter.

Pokerfuse described the Ignite shortfall as unusual for the regulated U.S. market, where overlays of that scale are more commonly linked to substantially larger global player pools. Legal US Poker Sites said the larger guarantees may be intended to attract players and that FanDuel’s wider sportsbook and casino operations could help meet the cost, but presented both points as possibilities rather than established explanations.
