Seven operators saw record revenue totals from real money online casinos in Michigan, as revenue from online poker and casino gaming hit a record $171.8 million in March.

Data from the Michigan Gaming Control Board (MGCB) show the market was up 16% month-over-month ($148.2 million) in March and had also increased 30.5% year-over-year ($131.7 million). March 2023 marked the biggest year-over-year change in revenue since November 2022, when the rate of increase was 35.2%.

Since the MGCB does not separate online poker revenue from online casino gaming, the contribution of poker to the final total is unknown. Online poker was up month-over-month in New Jersey and Pennsylvania, so it’s likely that poker in Michigan was up, too — although Delaware saw online poker revenue decline in March.

Top Trio Had a Record Month

March was a record month for all three of Michigan’s top iGaming operators — BetMGM, DraftKings, and FanDuel. The trio combined for 71% of the market in March, up slightly from 70.7% in February.

BetMGM Casino MI, the perennial market leader in the state, posted $56.2 million in revenue in March, up 16.1% month-over-month ($48.4 million). Operating under the land-based casino license of MGM Grand Detroit, BetMGM was also up 17.4% year-over-year ($47.9 million).

FanDuel Casino MI and DraftKings Casino MI continued their dogfight for second place. FanDuel came out on top for the seventh consecutive month with $34.2 million in revenue, up 15.9% from February ($29.5 million) and up 52% year-over-year ($22.5 million). Meanwhile, DraftKings grossed $31.6 million in March, up 17.7% from the previous month ($26.9 million) and up 52.3% from March 2022 ($20.7 million).

DraftKings last led FanDuel in August 2022, but only by about $33,400, MGCB data show. FanDuel operates under the MotorCity Casino license, while DraftKings is on the land-based casino license of Bay Mills Resort & Casino.

Four Smaller Operators Also Hit Records

The “Big Three” in Michigan weren’t the only operators to have a record month for revenue.

FourWinds, the online casino for three tribal casinos in Michigan, posted a record $3.8 million in March, up 11.9% month-over-month ($3.4 million). Its previous record was $3.5 million in January. The casinos are in Dowagiac, Hartford, and New Buffalo.

FireKeepers, another tribal casino, also had a record month with $1.9 million in revenue in March, up 19.5% from the previous month ($1.6 million). Its previous record high was $1.8 million, also set in January.

Despite a report that Australia’s PointsBet Holdings Limited plans to sell its US operations, PointsBet Casino MI was among the big winners in March — setting a record revenue mark of $1.7 million. The operator was up 12.2% month-over-month ($1.5 million).

PointsBet partners with the Lac Vieux Desert Band of Lake Superior Chippewa Indians, which owns and operates the Northern Waters Casino Resort in Watersmeet.

SI Casino, the online casino with a Sports Illustrated (SI) theme that debuted in February, grossed a record $2.1 million in March — its first full month of operations in the Wolverine State. SI Casino is a new platform co-developed by 888 Holdings and Authentic Brands Group (ABG), the parent company of SI.

The new platform takes over for TwinSpires Casino MI, which exited the market on September 6, 2002.
